Things to do in Western Colorado
Colorado’s Western Slope is a mix of mountains, canyons and river valleys separated from the state’s major cities, Denver and Colorado Springs. If you’re planning a trip, here are a few of our favorite things to do along the Western Slope.
Grand Valley
Located along the Colorado River close to the Utah border, Grand Valley consists of small but fruitful communities such as Grand Junction, Palisade and Fruita. This region is known for its orchards, wineries and vineyards (basically Colorado’s version of Napa Valley), but also plenty of nearby hiking, rafting and outdoor activities.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison
Black Canyon of the Gunnison is one of two national parks that graces Western Colorado (and probably one of the most underrated national parks). Certain parts of the gorge receive only 33 minutes of sunlight a day, giving the canyon its name and its unique, disorienting appearance. The south rim entrance in Montrose is open most of the year, while the north rim entrance near Crawford is closed in winter. Camping and hiking are popular outdoor activities, as well as rock climbing for those more experienced in the sport.
Telluride
One of Colorado’s historic gold rush towns, Telluride is praised for its beauty, bluegrass music festival and outdoor recreation. You can find plenty to do here year-round from skiing and off-roading adventures to climbing and hiking. For an incredible view of Colorado’s tallest waterfall, Bridal Veil Falls, try the Via Ferrata climbing route. If you’re prepared for Class III climbing, summit the nearby Mt. Sneffels.
Glenwood Springs
Many will immediately recognize (and smell) the infamous hot sulfur springs when passing by Glenwood Springs. This town is home to not one, but two hot springs, Glenwood and Iron Mountain, as well as the gorgeous Hanging Lake trail. As of August 2020, the town and nearby surrounding areas have been heavily impacted by the Grizzly Creek wildfire.
Aspen and Snowmass
About an hour’s drive south of Glenwood Springs is a little place called Aspen and its neighbor, Snowmass. Aside from skiing, Aspen is most known for the infamous Maroon Bells and Maroon Lake Scenic Trail. If you’re into backpacking, take the Conundrum Creek Trail to Conundrum Hot Springs, and don’t forget to acquire a permit in advance for overnight camping. For a longer hiking trip, go from Aspen to Crested Butte (or vice versa) over West Maroon Pass in summer or early fall. By foot, these towns are about 11 miles apart, but by car, they’re 100 miles apart.
Crested Butte
Crested Butte has more of a remote, quaint feel than a few other towns on this list. While fall is arguably one of the most beautiful times to visit for some prime leaf peeping, its wildflowers give the fall foliage a run for its money. Check it out in the winter for skiing, or find some incredible fly fishing spots nearby during the warmer seasons.
