In its southwest, there is the Mississippi Alluvial Plain, also called the Arkansas Delta. It is a flat landscape of rich alluvial soils, bisected by Crowley’s Ridge that in itself is a popular destination for its natural history and wildlife.

You may also be interested in visiting the Crater of Diamonds State Park. Located in Pike County, Arkansas, it is said to be the only diamond mine that remains active in the country. It is on an eroded surface of a volcanic crater. Today though, it is primarily a tourist destination where visitors can dig for their own jewels. It is, in fact, the only place in the world where the public can search for actual diamonds in their original volcanic source.

Another thing you might want to know before dropping by Arkansas is that mispronouncing “Arkansas” is technically illegal in the state. This is according to a law in 1947 that attempts to preserve the heritage and its etymology. According to the law, the word ‘Arkansas’ should be pronounced in three syllables. The last ‘s’ should be silent and each ‘a’ should be pronounced with the Italian sound. So before going, you might have to brush up on your pronunciation to avoid any trouble.
