Best Places to Camp in Iowa

Iowa USA

We cannot think of any other activity that gets you closer to nature than camping. While there are plenty of parks and spots to set up a camp on, every camping place is different. It is true that some places are better than others. Some are a bit more challenging and some are just more scenic. This is why doing research ahead of time, like what to expect and what to bring, is very important.

Now, if you are looking for the best places to camp out here in Iowa, you have come to the right place. In no particular order, here are our top 5:

Pikes Peak State Park

With 11.5 miles of trails for hiking and biking, Pikes Peak has plenty going for it. The trails even pass through waterfalls and streams. At certain parts, you will get an excellent view of the Mississippi River.

Pikes Peak State Park

Given the sheer size of this park, there are plenty of spots to set up your tent on. What we love about Pikes Peak though is how camp friendly it is for beginners. They even have tents and RVs on-site for those who do not have the equipment but want to go camping. We know how expensive camping gears can get.

The campgrounds also have power stations and modern showers. This makes Pikes Peak the perfect park for those who are just dipping their toes into the great outdoors.

Maquoketa Caves State Park

Caves are extremely fascinating. There is just something majestic about going underground and seeing the insides of the Earth. Maquoketa Caves State Park here in Iowa is particularly beautiful. Even if you are not into caves though, there are plenty of other activities you can pursue here.

Maquoketa Caves State Park

There are trails for hiking and the landscape above ground is just as beautiful. It is also an excellent spot for camping if you are ever in Iowa. Like Pines Peak, Maquoketa has campgrounds that conveniently have electric outlets and bathrooms. Also perfect for those who want to try out camping but are not ready to go full blown wild.

Backbone State Park

Backbone State Park

Backbone State Park is the first state park in Iowa. The park offers plenty of recreational activities, too. It has 21 miles of hiking trails and there are spots to swim, boat, and fish in. What we particularly like about Backbone though is the variety of camping options it offers. Backbone has campsites that have electricity and campsites that do not. The non-electric campsites are more off the grid, perfect for those who have some experience with camping. Or those looking for a challenge.

Bellevue State Park

Bellevue State Park is located just right outside of Bellevue, Iowa, and is a perfect camping destination for those who want to try out tree tents. Since it is by the lake, the scenery is instantly more refreshing and serene than the average campground. The sunrise is spectacular, too.

Clear Lake State Park

We love combining water activities with camping. Partly because most water activities are so exhausting that you just want to sleep. All without worrying about driving home and all that fuss.

If water activities and camping is what you are looking for, Clear Lake State Park is perfect for you. The beach is beautiful and there are plenty of spaces for camping here. Still, it can get pretty crowded so best to go on an off-season or a weekday.
