Michigan

Thanks to Michigan’s incredibly diverse landscape and history, tourists get to enjoy limitless activities in the state. From its freshwaters, dunes, islands, and historical sites, Michigan proves to be the ultimate destination for those who love adventure.

Geography

Michigan is located in the Great Lakes and Upper Midwest regions of the United States. The word Michigan itself comes from the Ojibwe word ‘mishigami’ meaning ‘large water’ or ‘large lake’. It is no surprise that the state is bordered by lakes from east to west. Namely Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, and Lake Superior. On its south, it is bordered by the states of Ohio and Indiana.

Michigan’s geography can be generally divided and described into two. There is the upper peninsula that is heavily forested and mountainous. It, in fact, holds one of the oldest chains of mountains in the world.

The lower peninsula is the larger region, occupying two-thirds of the entire state. The lower peninsula is, for the most part, level, with part of it gradually descending down to the slopes of Lake Michigan.

History

The region of Michigan was formed when the four major glaciers of Wisconsin glaciation started to recede. This then left a tundra-like environment. The melted ice then formed the lakes in and surrounding Michigan today.

The first sign of human existence was traced between 11,000 BC to 9000BC when archaeologists found evidence of sharpened stone tools in the area which they associate with Paleo-Indian’s appearance.

Before the Europeans arrived, historians note that there were at least three major tribes co-existing in the region of Michigan. It was in the 17th century when the first French started exploring the region. French people held power over Michigan for almost a century until it was turned over to the British. In 1837, Michigan would be named the 26th state of the United States.

Weather

Michigan’s climate can be best described as continental, although its two regions have more particular characteristics. Its southern and central parts, for instance, have warmer climates with hot summers and cold winters. Whereas its northern parts have a climate that can go a bit more extreme. Short summers and longer, and very cold winters.

The southern part of the state is also incredibly prone to tornadoes so do not be surprised, tornado sirens are usually scattered around vulnerable towns.

Tourism

Of course, the best way to really see the state of Michigan is through its waters. The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is one of our favorite spots for Lake Michigan. The Isle Royale National Park, on the other hand, is our favorite when it comes to Lake Superior.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy its cities, too, like Detroit Institute of Arts, Belle Isle Park, and Michigan’s Historical Museum.
