Geography

New Jersey is a small state located in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions of the country. On its north and east side is the state of New York. In fact, New Jersey’s largest metropolitan area falls well within Greater New York. Delaware and Pennsylvania borders it south and west. As the fourth smallest state by area in the country, you might be surprised to know that New Jersey is the seventh most populated state in the United States.

The state of New Jersey is often categorized into three major geographic regions. Namely: North Jersey, Central Jersey, and South Jersey. Some, however, would refer to it as North and South Jersey. The Northern parts are characterized as more wooded, rural, and mountainous. Still, a lot of people who live here commute everyday to New York City to work. While the South is known for its features by the ocean.

History

Studies show that New Jersey was inhabited by Native Americans for at least 2,8000 years prior to the arrival of the Europeans in the 17th century. It was the Dutch and the Swedish who would first put up their colonial settlements in the state. The British would, of course, later on seize control of the state.

New Jersey would proceed to play very important roles in history from the American Revolutionary War to the Industrial revolution. New Jersey’s rich history and culture would allow it to progress to the state it is today. Today, it is the most ethnically and religiously diverse state in the country with 56.4% of its children belonging to racial or ethnic minority groups. It has the second largest Jewish population, second largest Muslim population, and third highest Asian population.

Weather

The entire area of New Jersey can also be categorized by its two climate types. The South, Central, and some Northeastern parts of the state have been observed to have humid subtropical climates. The northwest, on the other hand, have a more humid continental climate which can be attributed to the area’s higher elevation.

Unfortunately, New Jersey is one of the states that is being affected by climate change at a much faster rate. A faster rate than any other parts of the country. Its average temperatures have been observed to be climbing throughout the years.

From the Atlantic’s City Famous Boardwalk, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, to the Liberty State Park. There are plenty of top rated destinations to visit in New Jersey. You would be surprised by how much there is to visit and see in this little state.
