Top destinations in Texas

houston texas

Texas always manages to exceed expectations and surprise its visitors. The variety of climate and landscapes makes Texas such an exciting destination. Especially for outdoor adventurers who are constantly looking for their next big adventure.

It has so many attractions. From cities, coastal beaches, mountains, and deserts — there are countless activities and too many destinations to visit in Texas. The sheer size of the state of Texas just makes it difficult to figure out where to start. These top destinations can give you an idea of just how much Texas has to offer.

Big Bend National Park

Features some of the most dramatic scenery of the state, the Big Bend of the Chihuahuan Desert of West Texas is a must-see. This series of mountains, canyons, and a river separates the United States from Mexico. The park offers plenty of adventures for those looking for it. It has an impressive network of hiking trails and a gorgeous campground to spend a couple of nights on.

Natural Bridge Caverns

Here at Take More Adventures, some of our favorite destinations are caverns, caves, and underground rivers. There is just something magnificent and endlessly fascinating about them. This is why we are always on the lookout for one wherever we go.

Natural Bridge Caverns, just a short drive from San Antonio, features a vast underground network of around 10,000 stalactite formations. Apart from the one underground, Natural Bridge Caverns also offers activities above ground like treetop climbing, ropeway crossing, and ziplining.

Houston’s Museum District

As much as we love the outdoors, a trip to any place is not complete without dipping your toes on the area’s art scene. In the heart of downtown Houston is the museum district with over 19 museums. The best part is, most of them are free. All walking distance to each other, you could easily spend a day or two just walking through all of it.

Our favorites, of course, are the Museum of Fine Arts and the Houston Museums of Natural Science. The district also has children’s museums, smaller more independent art museums, even historical museums. There is something for everybody in the district.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park

Another national park on the list is the Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Located a 100 miles east of El Paso, the park is home to the four highest peaks in Texas. It is also home to an impressive range of wildlife, including golden eagles.

Of course, the sight in itself is gorgeous and worth visiting on its own, even from a distance. Of course, hiking and backpacking through the Guadalupe Mountains is a different story. There are several routes you can take. Two of our favorites are the Guadalupe peak where the campground is 8,170 feet above and the Bush-Blue Ridge Loop. A much easier traverse that can be done as a one night trip. Either way, both are spectacular routes to take.

San Antonio’s River Walk

Now for a bit of a more rested adventure, check out San Antonio River Walk. It is located right at the heart of the city. The walk is lined with great restaurants with outdoor patios by its riverside. If you are up for it, you may also cruise the river and enjoy dinner on a riverboat.
