Kansas: Three Ultimate Road Trips to Take
Packed with national parks, wildlife, and wilderness — Kansas is truly a wonderful destination. It offers some of the most unique and stunning sceneries the Midwest has to offer. One of the best ways to really get the most out of your trip to Kansas is to take a road trip. Short or long ones, here are three of the most top-rated road trips you can take for a road trip of a lifetime.
A Waterfalls Road Trip
Kansas is often featured as this dry Midwestern state filled with farms. This trip around Kansas’ seven waterfalls will definitely prove you otherwise. You may begin with Alcove Springs or the Blue Rapids. Try to learn the history behind this gorgeous spring while enjoying its fresh flowing water. Then, the Geary State Lake Waterfalls at Junction City which features several waterfalls, one being 35 foot tall. You may then hike the Chase Lake Falls which feature these low but beautifully cascading falls.
Try not to miss the Cowley Lake Waterfall. It is probably our favorite fall on the list. You will know why once you get there. Then, there is the Eureka City Lake Falls. Next on the list would be Edgerton City Lake Falls. The most serene and peaceful out of the falls but is actually man-made. It does not make it any less interesting though.
End the road trip with a trip to Cedar Creek Falls which turns out to be a dam, and the falls is more of the dam overflowing. It certainly still makes for an interesting view. It is a great fishing spot as well so go bring a pole with you if you can.
A Road Trip to Kansas’ most haunted places
We know this one is pretty bizarre but a lot of people apparently go into these kinds of road trips. We are certainly not one to judge.
You may begin your trip with a ride to Atchison. Hailed by some as the most haunted city in Kansas. There are many spots to visit here like Jackson Park, Atchison Street, the House on Riverview Drive, the Sallie House, the Gargoyle Home, the Benedictine College, and then the Santa Fe Depot.
Next on the trip would be the Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery. There are stories of a woman in white being spotted here on more than one occasion. The woman often roamed the grounds at night, in search of her lost children. Now, we do not know if visitors are allowed to be here at night. Maybe it is best to just drop by during the daytime.
Third on the list would be Sauer Castle located in Kansas City. It is an 18th-century German Gothic mansion that has long been abandoned. Locals report several bizarre things from orbs, unexplained sounds, to straight-up paranormal sightings.
The next stop would be the Stull Cemetery. It gets even more bizarre from here as the old cemetery has been reported to be the location of the seven gateways to hell. The gates were said to appear after dark. Again, it is probably best to probably stick with a day trip.
Last but not least is Fort Riley, which circles back to Junction City, Kansas. The base has been said to contain the ghosts of military legends like General George Armstrong Custer. He and other unknown soldiers are said to roam the grounds.
A natural wonders road trip to the most scenic spots
Start at Quinter at Monument Rock and Castle Rock. Monument Rock is this 70 feet tall formation that can tower over you even in the distance. It is an iconic Kansas landmark that you just can’t miss. Castle Rock, on the other hand, is less popular but is just as impressive as Monument Rocks.
Then, drive to Gypsum Hills for the most beautiful hills, sinkholes, and mesas. Then, to Pillsbury Crossing Wildlife Area for some waterfalls and wildlife seeing. While in Manhattan, stop by Konza Prairie for a quick hike and to just see an expanse of 9,000 acres of native tallgrass.
End your trip at Mushroom Rock State Park for some of the most bizarre rock formations.
