Top Five Things to do in Maryland
A small state enveloping a bay, Maryland’s geographic biodiversity will surely take you by surprise. It has a variety of landscapes that can easily represent the entire country. From sandy dunes, rolling hills, forests, seagrass, to low marshlands teeming with wildlife — Maryland is truly America in Miniature.
Here are our five must-sees to get the most out of your trip to Maryland.
Camp at Assateague State Park
Blessed with a long stretch of the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, Assateague State Park is incredibly popular in the summer. Here you can swim, surf, or just lay down a blanket to sunbathe. Other activities you enjoy are fishing and kayaking. Since there is quite a large grassland in the area, horses beautifully and freely roam the area as well.
While the wind can be quite too much at certain months, Assateague is a great spot for camping. It offers the fresh air and the sea breeze that everyone needs once in a while. It is just an incredible spot to wake up in. If not, there are plenty of accommodations nearby for a more comfortable sleep.
Picnic at Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park
Also referred to as the “Grand Old Ditch”, C&O Canal is a dominant transportation route back from the early 19th century to the early 20th century. The canal follows the route of the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. to Cumberland, Maryland. The overall look of the structures of the water may somewhat feel like you are in Europe. The surrounding is incredibly serene, too, which makes it the perfect spot for a picnic!
There are many, many legends and ghost stories surrounding this historical park though. Legends are as crazy as a buried treasure somewhere to ghosts of the soldiers from the American Civil War. Maybe talk it over picnic — all the stories will certainly make for an interesting lunch.
Wildlife watching at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge
Home to over 1,000 animal species, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is an incredible spot to observe animals in their natural environment. Blackwater also features the overall natural beauty of Maryland: from the diversity of terrain and of wildlife in the area.
Other things you can do here are hiking, running, or biking. The park also has an impressive water trail system that is perfect for paddlers to enjoy wildlife from the water. Overall, Blackwater has everything you need for a memorable day trip.
Spend an afternoon at Ocean City Boardwalk
With three miles long of hotels, restaurants, and world-class resorts — exploring Ocean City Boardwalk can easily one whole day. The boardwalk is dotted with all sorts of street performers from acrobats to guitarists. Of course, another thing to just do is just enjoy all the great food available in the area.
There is Boog’s Barbecue and Thrasher’s French Fries to name a few of our favorites. Window-shopping (or actual shopping) on the many specialty stores scattered all over the boardwalk is always a good idea, too.
Visit Old Town Annapolis and William Paca House
To see the real and true charm of Maryland, you have to visit Old Town Annapolis. Apart from the charm of the old and historic structures in the old town, there are plenty of other destinations you can drop by, too. There is the William Paca House and Garden, the Maryland State House, and St. Anne’s Church.
Top your trip to Annapolis with a trip to Sandy Point State Park. It is free and offers a spectacular view of the sunset.
